ASK AARON - July 1999 Answer

From Betsy, LA

Why is height emphasized so much in modeling?

Dear Betsy:

The reason why height is so important in fashion modeling is because the designers make sample products for their shows. The models must be able to fit into their samples. The designers seem to feel that their clothes look best in a size 2-6 and when worn by woman who are between 5’9” and 6’ tall.

Remember, that is only for fashion modeling. There is a whole other world of modeling that has nothing to do with fashion, and that is commercial modeling. For commercial modeling you do not have the height restrictions that apply to fashion. Since commercial models are not promoting high fashion clothing photographers and art and creative directors are more interested in a specific look than only being concerned about height. There is also work available for petite models as well. As a matter of fact there is a whole sub division of commercial modeling called petite modeling. There is much more work available for commercial models than any other form of modeling.

To find commercial agents, simply call the agent and ask if they represent commercial models. In most markets commercial modeling is the primary work for models.
