ASK AARON - November 1999 Answer

From Denise, FL

I want to get my 8-month-old started in modeling. I have sent her pictures out to many agencies in my area with no response. I do not have professional pictures though. Should I send home snapshots or do I need to have a professional photographer take her pictures?

Dear Denise:

The funny thing with agents is that you can send them a photo one day and it gets thrown in the trash, and you send the same photo the next day and everyone loves the picture. That is true for submissions from children and adults.

You might want to make sure that the agents you are sending the photos to represent children. Some agents only work with adults, so they will trash any photos they receive from children no matter how great they look.

You are correct, young children do not need to have to go through expensive photo sessions. Young children’s looks change so often. A photo taken today will be obsolete in two months. If an agent does like the photo you sent, it will still be your responsibility to have other photos taken in the future.

It is rare for an agent to pay for a model’s photos. Sometimes in the fashion world, an agent will “front” the money for a photo session, but the model will have to reimburse the agent with the earnings from the model’s bookings.

I would get the names of all the agents in your area who represent children, and send them a new picture every month. You should also call around or even ask the agents if there are any managers in the area who represent children.
