ASK AARON - August 2000 Answer

From Amanda, MD

How can I find local photographers in my area?

Dear Amanda:

If you carefully read pages 25 – 28 in my book, you will learn how to get names of some wonderful local photographers. Here are a few other suggestions.

Go see some local plays or call local theaters and ask the actors for the names of photographers that they use.

You could try calling advertising agencies and ask the art and or creative directors which photographers they hire for commercial ads. You will begin to see certain names mentioned over and over. These are the photographers you want to contact.

Try contacting a local college, university, high school or camera store. At the schools find out if there is a photography class. Talk with the instructor to find out if there are any students that would be interested in shooting a head shot or photos for a portfolio. They can’t afford your modeling fees, so you could work out a deal where they do not charge you for their services and you do not charge them for yours. However, you will get a copy of the photos.

You could also try calling a camera store to see if there are any listings of assistant photographers in the area. These are people who are just getting started. They help load film, adjust lights etc. for professional photographers. They might be in need of working with a model to help build their portfolio.

You can also try contacting a local photography or camera club. Perhaps you can find a photographer there as well.

I hope these ideas are helpful to you. Don’t forget, I have lots more info in my book How to Become a Successful Commercial Model and updated information in my Tear Sheet newsletter.
