ASK AARON - December 2000 Answer

From Jack, CA

I have gotten a head shot taken and want to do the next step. Since I live in Louisiana , I am not in direct touch with the major players of the industry. I will be going to Los Angeles soon, and wanted to drop off my head shot at some agencies, but don't have a clue as to who to see. Can I call some agents and ask them out to lunch? This will give them a better idea of my character.

Dear Jack:

I would send out the head shots first. Most agents do not want people walking into their office to drop off head shots. If you are willing to move to LA, then see if you can get an LA phone number, prior to your move. Place the number on your head shot. Perhaps you can get an L.A. answering service number. That way the agents who are interested in contacting you, will know that you are in the area. Be ready to fly there at a moments notice for the interview.

I am not saying it could never happen, but the chances of an agent setting up a time to have lunch with an unknown actor, is highly unusual. If you were recommended by someone the agent knew, that would be a different story.

There are a number of ways to find names of agents in L.A.. You can purchase a copy of the Ross Report. It will list all the major agents in LA and give you a description of what they do, and who runs the different departments. To order a copy call, 1800-817-3273. You can also go to the SAG web site. In the search area at the site, just type in “agents”.

When you mail your head shot, it is really important to personalize the letter and envelope with the agent’s name. Don’t ever send a package addressed to “Dear Agent.”
