ASK AARON - May 2006 Answer

I can only say positive things about your "Boot Camp." What I enjoyed, in particular, was your "nuts and bolts" approach to the business side of things. Your advice was not only practical but artistically relevant as well. Indeed, an actor cannot succeed in the business without having talent coupled with an extraordinary ability to focus; thus, oftentimes, he/she must know precisely how to convey the appropriate emotions within a terse and rigid time frame in a rather austere professional setting. Further, the various tips given by your guest speakers were very rewarding as well. Again, thank you kindly for your care, consideration, and expertise.”

How many TFP (trade for print) sessions or experience is recommended before it is acceptable to start charging for your time as a model?

Dear Mara:

Once you have enough photos for a great composite sheet, then I would start looking into trying to get more paying jobs.

Mara, I don’t think you ever stop doing TFP shots. There are always specific types of shots that you will need, and if you can get them free, then why not do them as a TFP. The key thing is to make sure you know exactly how to create the shot you need, and give the photographer all of the needed information.
